How Wi-Fi Enables Digital Transformation for the Green Bay Packers

Ryan Hall Manager, Vertical Solutions Marketing Published 21 Sep 2018

To deliver an enhanced game day experience and embrace digital transformation opportunities moving forward, sports teams are deploying purpose-built network solutions in their venues.  Doing so meets the mobile expectations of today’s connected fan while also supporting the critical day-to-day operations of the business and the environment.

This includes National Football League team the Green Bay Packers, the second oldest sports franchise in the United States.  Lambeau Field is the Packers home stadium, and with a capacity of over 81,000 people it is the second largest stadium in the NFL.  The Packers brought Lambeau Field to the forefront of technology with high-density Wi-Fi prior to the ’15-’16 NFL season with very positive results:

  • Customized network solution to meet digital expectations of fans, specific goals of the business, and unique characteristics of the stadium – without compromising historic integrity of the venue.
  • High-density Wi-Fi connectivity delivering complete, reliable coverage for guests and detailed Wi-Fi analytics of network performance and mobile engagements.
  • Complete support and enablement of critical business functions, event management assets, and fan-facing services in and around the stadium.
  • Wi-Fi Coach Program for in-person onboarding, service, and support for fans accessing the network.

To accomplish these results, the Packers teamed up with Extreme Networks, the Official Wi-Fi Provider of the NFL, to ensure the needs of their business were met.  Hear from Wayne Wichlacz: Director of Information Technology with Green Bay Packers, as he describes his experience working with Extreme Networks on this important project.

The construction and what we did in terms of installing that initial Wi-Fi environment in the stadium is a very complicated project. It involved not only the technical aspects that Extreme’s engineers came out and helped us with in terms of designing the technical piece, but it's also a construction project, pulling cable, installing access points in those enclosures. The ability of Extreme and their partners to be able to manage all of the different vendors that we're working with us was really key and critical to the successful implementation.
